The early lessons in building a strong community of social communicators

In 2023, Communication for Change (C4C) and Yayasan Bahana launched Suluh Penggugah, an initiative designed to build a skilled, thriving communication professionals community within CSOs through cohort-based learning programs. Since then, we've kept in touch with approximately 50 alumni, and now, we're looking to expand this community to include even more communications professionals working in CSOs across Indonesia.

However, we know that managing a thriving community—especially in the early stages—can be challenging. Members often come from diverse regions, juggle busy schedules, and face barriers to consistent engagement. So, how can we effectively manage a community of communications professionals in CSOs? Let’s explore some key lessons we’ve learned from our Suluh Penggugah alumni community project.

1. Start with a clear "What's in it for Me?"
The first question any community member will ask themselves is: "Why should I engage in this activity?

That’s why, before forming a community, it's crucial for community managers to address this. The foundation of a thriving community lies in a shared, mutual purpose. In the context of Suluh Penggugah, we learned that mutual purpose can include:

  • Mental health and social-emotional support: Providing sessions for members to share experiences and support each other through the challenges they face.
  • Professional development opportunities: Creating chances for members to learn new skills, stay updated on trends, and collaborate on projects that enhance their work as communication professionals working in CSOs.

Furthermore, to truly understand the needs of a community, consider using tools like an Empathy Map. This will help you map out the emotions, needs, and pain points of your members. If you’re unfamiliar with Empathy Maps, check out this article on how to use them to strengthen your community-building efforts.

2. Choose the right communication platform
Once the community’s purpose is defined, it's time to think about how to keep everyone connected. This is where selecting the right communication platform becomes critical. After the Suluh Penggugah program ended, we faced the challenge of maintaining engagement. We relied on different tools like:

  • Mailing lists: Effective for sending updates, newsletters, or resources to the entire community.
  • Group chats: Instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram allow for more informal communication and peer-to-peer interaction.
  • Microsites or member portals: A dedicated online space to share resources, event updates, and foster deeper discussions.

We chose WhatsApp group chat as the primary platform for Suluh Penggugah because it's the most widely used by our members and is very user-friendly. The right platform choice depends on the community's preferences. Look for tools that are easily accessible, encourage active interaction, and can scale as your community grows.

3. Build habits and routines to nurture a sense of belonging
Members need triggers to engage; don't expect them to act independently. Without regular and moderated interaction, even the most well-intentioned community can fizzle out. Community managers need to create habits and routines that help members feel connected. Consider organizing:

  • Sharing sessions: Encourage members to share experiences, challenges, or successes related to their work.
  • Casual meet-ups: Virtual or in-person gatherings to build connection and a sense of belonging.
  • Themed discussions or challenges: This can help keep the conversation flowing and give members something to look forward to.

Make sure that these activities align with the community’s mutual purpose and are manageable for your members. Regular, low-pressure activities may help establish a routine that encourages long-term engagement.
