Who is it for?

Directors or program managers in nonprofits, or social entrepreneurs who want to sustain or scale up their programs or organizations.

Why do you need it?

To succeed, your programs or organizations need supporters including donors, philanthropists, and impact investors. But these people need to be convinced that you can deliver impact. Meanwhile, your programs or organizations are not yet in the position to share proper impact evaluation reports. You must resort to what are commonly known as “stories of change”.

Unfortunately many organizations often end up producing stories of change that fail to rekindle optimism and thus convince possible supporters. In this class, we will introduce a suite of tools that facilitate you to craft a powerful story of change in whatever format you need: written text, photo essays, and even videos. These tools are widely used in major movie studios and by great fiction writers from around the world.

What will you learn?

In two half-day sessions (9.00 – 12.00 WIB) with individual practices session (12.00-14.00 WIB), you will learn:

Session 1:
Crafting a story, not writing a report

By the end of this session, each participant will be able to:

  1. Analyze the audience to determine the overriding objective of his/her story of change.
  2. Apply the most suitable basic plot to his/her program’s story of change.

Session 2:
Writing your story in a structure

By the end of this session, the participants will be able to outline his or her story of change and identify the steps to take it to the next level.

Some of the concepts or tools you will learn about:

  1. From-to table.
  2. The basic plots.
  3. The 3-act story structure.
  4. The universal metaplot.

And there will be a lot of practices!

What apps we will use in the class?

  1. Zoom video conference: it’s a video conference app. We will use it for live class session.
  2. MURAL: it’s a digital flipchart app. We will use it for group brainstorming session.
  3. Google Classroom: it’s a digital classroom app. We will use it for class learning material deployment and class practices submission.
